Stewart Homestead Cabin History
Henry
Stewart was born in Belfast, Ireland, and came to the United States
in 1881 at the age of 24. He lived and worked in Lisbon, Illinois to
save enough to return to Ireland to bring back his bride to be,
Margaret Curlett. They were married in 1894 and four girls were born
before moving to the Stewart Homestead in Delta County, Western
Colorado.
There
were four boys and another girl born in Colorado, but two of the
boys were lost early in life. The babies are buried in back of the
original cabin, possibly under the apricot trees located nearby.
Seven
children in a one room cabin without the luxury of electricity or
running water!
Much
more of the history of the Stewart Homestead and the area is
available when you visit the Cabin! You can even sit by the outdoor
campfire and enjoy the same majestic views of the mountains that the
Stewart family enjoyed more than 100 years ago. |
